Player Insurance - advice from the AFLBJ

You may or may not have seen the recent media articles surrounding a rugby league player being hurt and not covered by insurance.  We are unsure how insurance works in rugby league but it seems from the outside that this club does not have any insurance and relies solely on the players having their own private cover.

AFL Brisbane Juniors, in fact all AFL competitions around the country, use JLT Sport for insurance. There is a standard insurance with optional upgrades. AFL Brisbane Juniors have chosen to take the highest optional upgrade available, which is platinum. The maximum is $7,500 per claim with a $50 excess and there is a maximum of $50,000 for under 18 of Capital Benefits available plus an optional upgrade for Loss of Income. There is also available what is called a Discretionary Trust that could be utilised for claims for ongoing injuries above the maximum claim amount on an application basis.

While we realise that not all families can afford private insurance, it is recommended by the insurance company.
